Welcome! This website is an opportunity to share some of my writing. You will find the first four chapters of my novel, "Miss Madeira," the story of an “Old Maid” schoolteacher in the first half of the 20th century. No one knew the shocking secrets of her home life--only that she was a brilliant but formidable teacher, who produced several generations of students forever known as: “Madeira’s Kids.” ‘As anyone with an intimate knowledge of the workings of small-town America knows, episodic memory is the bailiwick of barbershops, beauty shops and pool halls.’
You'll also find first chapters of my novels (in progress): "Genius," the story of the inventor of the infamous Paige Compositor--the typesetter that nearly bankrupted Mark Twain. "All the other inventions of the human brain sink pretty nearly into commonplaces contrasted with this awful mechanical miracle. Telephones, telegraphs, locomotives, cotton gins, sewing machines, Babbage calculators, Jacquard looms, perfecting presses, Arkwright's frames – all mere toys, simplicities! The Paige Compositor marches alone & far in the lead of human inventions." ~Mark Twain
And, "The Queerling," about a 21st century Holden Caulfield confined in a Portland, OR mental hospital. ‘On second thought, Doc, don’t even bother to read “Catcher” if you haven’t. It’s about a self-indulgent little jerk-off who’s a reflection of the very ideals he rejects. Fuck that!’
Also, there are several short stories taken from my unpublished autobiographical novel, Ask Me No Secrets. And, my new Blog: Miscellany. (The world from my skewed perspective). And several of my songs--including my BMI Award-winning song, "The Car," and "One Stone At A Time," recorded by the legendary Tammy Wynette.
The Events page features a link to my THORNTON WILDER and my MLK stories on KUOW (Seattle). The Sept. 2nd Blog contains "The Car" video, winner of the '96 ACM Award.
If you enjoy the writing, I hope you’ll recommend this site to your friends.
All the Best,
~Austin
